WI- successful pan-arabism

What if, during the 20th century, some Arab leader (Gamal Nasser?) managed to unite most of the Arab nations under his rule, in a federative republic (or a dictatorship)? What will happen to Israel? Will it be a second yugoslavia, and be finally torn apart by civil war?

OTL, the United Arab Republic fell apart because the Syrians viewed the Union as Egyptian dominated (It was) and they thought that while Egyptian Businessmen gained many advantages from, Syrians did not (also true). Prehaps if other countries such as Iraq joined the Union, that could balance out Egyptian dominance, but they will want to join in a way that would still leave them the advantage of their oil.

In order to be a more permanant state, the leader of this hypothetical republic would need to gain legitimacy, and the most obvious way to do this is to achieve victory over Israel in a war. Prehaps if the first few years of a republic are spent getting the the Arab armies up to at least Egyptian standards, and the Arabs get to attack first in the war, they have a good chance of winning.

If this war fails, whatever ideology the leader tries, the people won't support him. But if they win, he can build up some support for the system so that it has a chance of succeeding. The Arab world might be better off in this new state, as oil profits will go towards the greater Arab world, leading to more spending on education (rather then expensive welfare state systems to keep their people on side).

An Arab victory in the Israeli War of Independence would have led to a largely Arab mideast. With that, Nasser's Arab socialism might have spread in rapid succession to the various Arab countries as armies revolted. While there likely wouldn't have been a single Arab state, it is quite reasonable to see the Arab Union become significantly stronger, with wealthy and powerful Egypt as its center. Another possible unification is through intermarriage between Arab monarchies and monarchist co-opting of pan-Arabism, maybe blended with Islamism to allow for a return of the Caliphate?

So no UAR (United Arab Republic) as long as Israel exist? Makes sense. Just like in 1871, only a common enemy will make people stand together. What modern states will the UAR have? Will it include Somalia? Will it have non-Arab Muslim countries like Iran and Turkey?

Don't forget to factor in the USA's reaction. This is the height of the Cold War, after all; it's not going to stand idle while the Arab world coalesces into a potentially Soviet-friendly nation that just happens to sit on vast amounts of oil AND the Suez Canal (potentially the Bab el-Mandeb as well, if the UAR grows to include Somalia).

The USA will try to destabilize this hypothetical successful UAR, possibly by sabotaging it from within, siding with Israel in the war (possibly it turns into another Vietnam-like scenario), or by propping up local dictators or event a competing Arab union state (albeit one kept on a short leash).

If you want your UAR to survive it needs to overcome the hurdles the USA will drop in its path, and if it manages to do that... The butterflies... Oh god, the butterflies...

Pan-Arabism was basically a joke and was completely unrealistic due to the political and cultural differences and also the competing egos of the leaders involved.
