In 1956 Malta held a referendum to see if the people wanted to become an official part of the United Kingdom. With 59% turnout 77% voted yes. There were several people in both countries against integration and Malta eventually received independence.

What if Malta successfully became part of the UK?

My first thought which is a pretty insignificant question is - Would the UK's official name become,
"The United Kingdom of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and Malta" and be even
more of a mouthful?

Malta would have received 3 seats in the House of Commons. How would this effect UK politics?

Would this set a precedent and allow any other colonies to integrate?
Could this delay independence of some colonies, with them hoping to receive the same treatment?

And finally how would this change the UK's entry into the EU?
