WI:Successful draft Muskie Movement?

During the 1980 election, there was a fairly big "Draft Edmund Muskie' Movement to get Edmund Muskie to run in 1980,Muskie was actually fairly popular, once even leading in the polls as a popular alternative to Carter, but it ultimately failed due to Muskie apparently not taking interest. But what if Muskie was more focused on the Primaries? What if Muskie challenged Carter?,could he win the nomination?, how would this affect the 1980 election?,would Muskie do better than Carter, or even (and I do know this is very ASB) win the election?

Well, I tihnk Muskie's appeal was as a fair compromise between Carter and Kennedy. Maybr have Kennedy do better in the primaries and a rough convention. Muskie becomes the compromise.

I think the way to make this work is if you somehow wind up with a repeat of '68; that is, Carter realizes how vulnerable he looks, and voluntarily bows out. Given the way the DNC in particular restructured the primary system by 1980, if Carter wants to fight to the bitter end, then he can.

If Carter bows out, who would be Muskie's running mate? Could Ted Kennedy be chosen to keep the liberals happy?
