WI: Stephen Douglas lived

That's interesting, because he seems to have been a 'hard war' man but probably not so keen on abolition. I don't see him having much truck with the Peace Democrats. Best case scenario for Lincoln is he accepts a position in the Lincoln cabinet or as a general.

In the election of 1860 after he knew he was going to lose, he campaigned in the South speaking against secession and abolitionists extremists.
Douglas after the election went to the border States to shore up support to stay in the Union.
Lincoln consulted with him about calling up 75,000 troops and Douglas told him to make it 200,000 troops to thoroughly crush the rebellion.
Douglas was very popular with Irish-Americans and probably could have made it more popular for them to support the Union cause and not have the Draft Riots.
I think he would have supported the Emancipation Proclamation as a war measure as it only applies to areas that were in rebellion but not under Union control.
I think he would have supported the passage of th XIII Amendment but I have doubts about the XIV and XV Amendments.
