WI: Stauffenberg escapes to Sweden

OTL after seeing the bomb going off in the confrenceroom Stauffenberg was convinced that Hitler was dead.

What if he had a radio on the plane or gotten news at the airport before takeoff that Hitler was alive and he decided to escape to Sweden.

What happens? Does Sweden throw him back to Germany or tell Hitler "Stauffen who? Nobody with that name in our country."

By July 1944, there was no possibility of the Swedes returning him. In say 1941, however, I think he would have been placed on a plane back to the wolf's lair.

I think its more likely that he warns the others that Hitler is alive and surrenders to the Americans.
How could he get to the Americans? Staufenberg was in East Prussia. Normandy and Italy were too far away. Even if he could reach American lines in theory, his plane would likely be shot down.

His family is dead or winds up in a concentration camp

THIS.

Stauffenberg isn't going to cut and run because he knows his wife and children will end up on meat hooks as proxies for him.

Make him a bachelor or kill off his wife and kids in a bombing raid, train wreck, or some manner and he might attempt to escape.

How viable would it be for von Stuaffenberg to get his wife and kids to safety as well? I would assume it would be substantially more difficult than just getting out himself (especially since he wouldn't have much time to plan an escape) but could it be done with enough skill/luck?

I would say somewhat viable, if they were staged near a border in advance. Stauffengerg had the influence to get them any travel permits, residency permits etc that they needed. The family could re locate to near the Swiss border or even to Nazi controled Denmark. Contacts with smugglers established. If the coup fails, they try to run to Sweden or Switzerland. I am guessing that the Denmark might be the most viable. German naval patrols were light and a large number of Jews escaped via Denmark to Sweden.

First post in 2 months.

Short: German heros don't run

Long: Stauffenberg would have gone on with his plan even if he had known earlier that Hitler survived. There was still a chance that General Stieff could block the Führerhauptquartiers communication long enough for the coup to succed. He and his close co-conspirators knew that they were on a near suicide mission and had accepted it (He had said goodby to his family and if it would have been possible he would have taken them to safety).
