WI: Star Wars Prequels in late 1980s

Neither Jar Jar or Qui-Gon will exist, nor likely Darth Maul (though he's the only good thing about the prequels. God Dammit, Georgie, I thought he was gonna be the new Darth Vader figure for the prequel era and you have him taken out like a bitch). Those were the fevered dreams of a crazed Lucas who fell to the dark side. He's more machine than man, now (being that he went from practical effects and story to 3D studio max and blue screen sets; actually, I interpret the prequel production as a meta story for Darth Vader. A once belov-ed figure who created a classic space opera and pioneered practical effects and a return to classic high adventure, who fell to the dark forces of artistic tampering, CGI overuse, and poor story telling, who rejected his fan base and became reviled by those who once loved him.).

Just thinking off the top of my head, but what if we had River Phoenix as Anakin Skywalker?

I've thought that would have been a good choice, too. I've also heard Johnny Depp proposed. I suppose it depends on if you want Sebastian Shaw black, or Mark Hamill blond.

Considering that River Phoenix played a young Indy in Last Crusade, it wouldn't be unthinkable (that is, if the prequel trilogy is made like in 1992-1998 or something). You'd have to prevent his early death, of course.

"I am not a Sith!" :p
One other thing I probably should tell you because if we don't they'll probably be saying this about me too, we did get something-a gift-after the election. A man from the trade federation heard Pat on the radio mention the fact that our two youngsters would like to have a dog. And, believe it or not, the day before we left on this campaign trip we got a message from Koresat. You know what it was.

It was a Cannok in a crate that he'd sent all the way from Dxun. And our little girl-Tricia, the 6-year old-named it Checkers. And you know, the kids, like all kids, love the Cannok and I just want to say this right now, that regardless of what they say about it, we're gonna keep it.
:p

Ooh! I remembered an idea I had: Bringing back in the Good Father/Evil Father dynamic. Anakin has a good father. This father may be out of the picture, with Anakin not discovering him till later. He also has the evil father figure in Palpatine.

And this good father will be played by...Brian Dennehy!!!!

'nudder bump.

Interview with Irvin Kershner

http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2010/10/irvin-kershner

I remember reading in 1983 that George was going to take two years off, then take three years to make the first prequel, which would be released in 1988. If that had actually happened in 1988 (instead of 1999), would you have considered directing one of the prequels?

Ten years later, I would have said yes to directing one of the prequels.

Lucas should have had Kershner direct at least Episode I.

If it were the '99 version, you mean, it'd have been interesting. And a different story too, as Kershner would have made revisions and worked with his actors and figured out what worked and what didn't. And he may have kept CGI out of it more. But, he was already old by that point, so who knows.

For the '88 ATL version we're working with here, it would have been awesome. And Kershner would have been good at it for some of the reasons I just mentioned above. He was a good director. I'm not familiar with his work, so if this alternate Episode I is a bright intro to the prequel era (keep in mind, a prequels series of any other period than when they were actually made would have been a totally different story, just with the elements already stated from the Original Trilogy), I'm not sure exactly what it would be like since I'm only familiar with him from the dark and brooding "Empire Strikes Back". But I think he was a capable enough director that it would have turned out quite well.
