WI: Star Trek the Movie Follows Original Plot

What if instead of the OT plot that came out with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, it maintains the original one of having to allow the assassination of American President John F. Kennedy in order to keep the same future? How do audiences react to this controversial plot?

Bad as "TMP" was, that would be worse.

And it's been done: "City on the Edge of Forever". I imagine Harlan would sue. That IMO is a good reason Paramount lawyers would never allow it.

And kill the only half decent episode of Red Dwarf season VII?

Also consider how insulting it would be. It would on par with a Star Trek plot wherein time travelers help pilot the 9/11 planes into the World Trade Center. Remember that it was just 15 years after the assassination and just 10 after Robert F. Kennedy's assassination. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was one of the leader of the Democratic Party and Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis would slam the film for trivializing such a tragedy...
