WI Stalin is nicer?

Suppose that Stalin is a little nicer to the Red Army. Instead of killing 35.000 officers, he locks them up if he considers them dangerous so guys like Tuchachevsky stays alive and comes out when Stalin thinks the Nazis are too big a threat to ignore. Also, the NKVD starts tapping the phones and embedding the officers' corps with infiltrators just in case.

What now?

I think this has been done before--basically, the gist in the previous similar threads is that WW2 is gonna go a hell of a lot easier for the Sovs.

Then at night he goes home and cries because he's so lonely at the top and desperately needs someone to care for him.

They make a stuffed animal called "Joey" for Soviet children to snuggle with at night. That is until the Nazis crush the Soviet state and wipe them out. No tough Stalin, no surviving USSR.
