Supposedly there was a plan to assassinate Stalin hatched in 1938 by six White Guards of the Union of Russian Patriots to kill stalin while he took a 'healing bath' which apparently he always took alone in the room. Of the six men involved three were killed attempting to cross the Turkish-Soviet border sometime in 1939 and thus the plan was abandoned - what if he had been killed?

Who would have succeeded him? Would the succession bring chaos or order/stability? Assuming that the assassination happens post Molotov-Ribbentrop pact would his successor maintain the non-aggression pact with the Germans (at least until the Germans broke it)?
