WI Stalin dies during barbarossa

Say that in late 1941 early 1942 due to something happening Stalin dies right in the middle of operation Barbarossa. So what happens. Can Russia still put the fight it did in otl, how differently would WWII go? What do you guys think will happen?

The death of Stalin in late 1941 may lead to an armistice with the Germans, assuming Hitler is willing to accept less than a total victory in the East in late 1941 or early 1942. It is much more likely that a well-positioned successor--perhaps Molotov--or joint group of successors lead the Soviet Union and continue the war.

Hahahahaha!
No. As far as Hitler was concerned, the Soviet Union was only fit for conquest and extermination, with or without Stalin.

What most likely happens is a joint-rule set up amongst the rest of the Politburo followed by a power struggle after the war. They are too well aware of the threat of the Germans to try and do it during the war and both the Red Army and NKVD are a bit busy with the Wherhmacht.

I also seriously doubt Hitler would have been willing to agree to an armistice with Stalin's successor, or successors, in late 1941 or 1942. For an armistice in the East, the war must be stalemated and, perhaps, Hitler eliminated.

Molotov is probably the best positioned Soviet leader to succeed Stalin as dictator in late 1941 or early 1942. If he cannot seize power alone, then he will have to share it with one or more members of the Politboro like Zhdanov, Kaganovich, Andreyev, Voroshilov, Khrushchev, Kalinin, Mikoyan, and Beria.

The question is what terms the Soviets would offer to tge Germans.
If the Soviets are willing to give up everything West of the Astrakhan-Arhangelsk line, then the Germans may very well accept. The Germans were not interested in Siberia.

Hitler was interested in perpetual war with the USSR. Why would he such a peace deal when he figures he would be able to take all that territory anyways and murder all of those subhuman slavs as a bonus? In anycase, the Soviets would never be willing to give up that much. A Brest-Litovsk style deal is the best peace deal (for the Germans) they would ever consider...

In any case, the main impact of the death of Stalin is on Soviet morale. Administratively, the USSR could function without him...

Soviets won't give up the AA line. Hitler has done a lot of damage, but the 1941/1942 Winter Offensive showed the Red Army could defeat the Wehrmacht, and much of that territory is still held by the Soviets. That early, the Soviets might be willing to give up the Finnish territory they took, the Baltics, their half of Poland, and some territory in Ukraine & Belarus, but no more. That of course, is too far small for Hitler to accept. So the war will go on.

If Hitler's in charge, the Nazis will negotiate a peace with the USSR over a bridge of Soviet corpses drinking lagers to commemorate that "heroism." That's the only concept of peace Nazi Germany understood.
