WI Spain was more willing to sell colonies?

Hey Guys,

In a lot of Alternate History's, people have Spain sell certain colonies to other nations. At which point other members will call ASB as IOTL the Spanish were so against selling colonies, even for good amounts of money.

So what if after the rebellions of New Spain (around 1823) the Spanish don't have the aversion to selling colonies that they had IOTL.

Who might offer to buy colonies from them? And if a nation did how much would they pay and what would they do with the new colonies they'd gain?

After the Hispanic American wars of independence all you've got for the Spanish Empire is the Caribbean and Philippines, I believe...and the buyers there? I guess Britain or to a lesser extent America for Cuba. Cuba becomes a state, dur, I guess PR and Philippines become Crown Colonies.

Later on perhaps Morocco becomes all-French or something, whom knows. :p

I've always wondered what it'd be like if the USA bought Cuba from Spain in 1854 as President Franklin Pierce, American Minister to Spain Pierre Soulé, and Secretary of State William L. Marcy wanted.....

Not likely. The prime reason Spain got Spanish Morocco was so Britain would agree to France having the rest of the country. The two powers were still rivals at the time albeit with growing mutual concern about imperial Germany. Hence Britain was not happy with the idea of France controlling the southern part of the straits.

In terms of the remaining Spanish colonies it would depend on the circumstances. For the US to buy Cuba it would primary be an aim of the southern slavery interests. I'm not sure whether either Spain, the northern states or other powers [chiefly Britain] would be happy with such an expansion. After any civil war or other ending of slavery would the US want to add a territory chiefly populated by Latinos and blacks?

Similarly I'm not sure whether Britain would be interested in buying Cuba either before or after Britain ends slavery in its empire? Possibly to prevent someone else [France?] buying the island, although after the Napoleonic wars were over how significant was the Caribbean to Britain?
