What if, for whatever reason, all of Spain's colonies in the new world failed? Who would colonize where? What would the end result be?

Sorry for the simplistic WI, I was originally have all the major empires (England, France, Portugal, and Spain) have their colonies in the New World screwed over, but if that happened, I think everyone else would decide the new world was hopeless and just not bother with colonizing it at all, which would be great for the natives, but not what I'm looking for in this particular alternate history scenario.

The French and English? If they start per 1560-1570s of course. Although France was having their war of religions and the English were only starting to look outside the British Isles by the 1570s...

It has butterfly effects on France as well as no Spain in Americas means a severe loss in income which helps the French. Maybe France can stabilize by the 1580s at latest.

I'm planning on making a less colonized America's, but it is hard to say. Spain would still be able to colonize the Caribbean Islands, and powerful native empires could keep aggressive exploration and colonization at bay, or at least not devolve into area's easily exploited by the Spanish. Portugal could try and step in but they have to the potential to greatly overextend themselves.

What happens next depends on what happens in Europe, What happens in Europe is a big question for England and France, because depending on the POD the Reformation could rear its ugly head, and the Dutch are still under Hapsburg rule. You need to set out a clear POD because even from just 1492 there are a lot of variables to work out.

I'm surprised and saddened that nobody's mentioned the Dutch yet...
At this point there are no Dutch yet. They are a country occupied by the Spanish. Interesting thing, though, is that without the Spanish colonies in the Americas Spain is in a worse financial position than OTL, meaning tat the Dutch revolt might be more succesful and you could have a larger Dutch colonial presence in the Americas.

How if this thanks more powerful and virus resistanted native, them nobody would have better luck, that change everything

So you’ve given Mesoamerica a far greater chance at survival: they get hit by the diseases thanks to the initial arrivals but not the accompanying conquest and cultural (and to some degree mortal) genocide. The Aztecs probably fall to a coalition of their subjects, but instead of Spanish Mexico you get a Tarascan state, a Tlaxcalan state, and so on. In the long run these are probably subject to European colonial games, but their fundamental cultures will persist to a greater extent than OTL.

Perhaps...

Because the POD we need for this WI probably butterflies them as an independent nation in the early modern period?

Well, someone before you mentioned the Dutch, after I said that; and here's what they had to say:

So, yeah...

No Tordesillas (my hobby horse as usual). Portugal and Spain directly compete in every area. France and perhaps Catholic England also jump in early. Castille doesn't own the rights to colonization within the Spanish crown - Aragon and its allies/dependencies might jump in too. Lots of small competing colonies, gobbled up by the French, English or Dutch when one of them hits a lucky patch.

This is a WI, not an AHC...
