WI Spain had joined WW2

Hi all,

This is my first post on here, I hope I've got the right board and correct protocol.

My question is this. What if Spain joined the Axis after the fall of France, say September 1940. The view taken would be that the Allies are doomed, there's no threat to their northern boarder and they could potentially gain Gibralter along with perhaps one or two French North African colonies. We know that the Vichy French government was in no position to defend its colonies when it came under preasure, (Indo China was handed to the Japaneese).

Does Spain gain Gibralter, if so, what impact will this have on the war in the Med, are the British able to fight an effective naval campaign there without the holding the keys to the gate, (Gib), will it therefore hand most of the Med to the Italians, will the North Africa campaign go badly for the British. What will be the overall effect on the Axis war of a different southern flank and the addition of Spain on their side?

Hope this is of interest.

Thanks

Hi all,

You have, but you might consider looking up past threads having exactly the same question. If you find them interesting and want to discuss them more, you can just "bump" them to the first page by psoting to them a short message stating your interest, so that further discussion would be built upon facts already ascertained - for instance, a fact is that if Britain is an enemy of Spain, the Spanish population will largely starve. In the aftermath of the Civil War, its agriculture was not self-sufficient and it was importing its food from overseas. Just an example of information you may glean by looking at past discussions.

Well, I say that in the start it would get a bit bad for the Allies, as Spain might manage to conquer Gibraltar, but in the long run it'll prove to go even worse for the Axis powers, because after 3 years of civil war I doubt that the Army and the industry would be up to notch and be able to fight in a war. Sure, they did win against the Republic, but we have to remember that the Republic didn't have the best of equipment, and a good part of its army was made of people without military training. I doubt that they would be able to hold against the British Army or the Americans, when they come.
