I'm currently reading through Roy Jenkins' biography of Stanley Baldwin. It's good stuff, and one thing I would like to note at the start of the book is that Baldwin was offered the position of Governor General of South Africa. He refused, but what if he had accepted? Who would become Tory leader in his stead (Curzon?)? Would the Conservatives win the 1923 election with a different leader? How does this affect the development of South Africa?
