Much of South America's failure can be traced back to big state socialism and its implications. My question is, how badly were South American socialist movements affected by Soviet aid? Without it, how right wing and/or free market would the region generally be?

EDIT: For the record, let's suppose there's no WWI to begin with, and any major conflict is avoided until the 1940's. This means no "zeitgeist" for socialism, communism etc. that could've contributed to the question at hand even without material or intellectual help.

The strongest Socialist Party in Latin America before 1917 AFAIK was the Socialist Party of Argentina. In the legislative elections of 1914 (the first following the 1912 Sáenz Peña Law, which established universal, secret and compulsory male citizens' suffrage), they got 9.3% of the vote, and 9 (out of 120) seats in the Chamber of Deputies. They outpolled the Radicals in the City of Buenos Aires. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argentine_legislative_election,_1914 Not a bad showing, but I doubt they ever had much chance off coming to power--the problem being that populists from Yrigoyen to Peron cut into the Socialists' potential working class strength.

Of course you are seem to be using the word socialism a bit differently from the way I am using it, but IMO calling all parties that are not "right wing and/or free market" socialist makes the term so broad as to be meaningless. In any event in Argentina the decline of the Conservatives certainly antedated the Russian Revolution.

Might actually be stronger, CIA involvement would not be as overt if there's no rival superpower involved.

Since when latín América have a big state?. If anything we have a pitiful small state, you could research the data here https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NE.CON.GOVT.ZS?locations=US-XJ, it´s the world bank information, so if anything we could trace the latin america problems to a too little state, incapable of ensure minimal standar of security, a good police force and a efective judicial system.
Because of that situation the socialism is so atractive in latin america, it´s the only politic alternative that promise a bigger state, a thing the elite here know are un lack

if you have a diferent source of infomation about the "big socialist state" in latin america please share the information because i can´t find anything( i have more information
about this but it´s mostly in spanish)

Edit: minor speeling problems and overall redaction

Given how often the US interfered with and overthrew South American countries before the Cold War, and before the USSR, I wouldn't count on it. If anything the absence of a major self-professedly anti-imperialist power, who was a major patron of anti-colonial and anti-imperialist movements (except when it conflicted with their interests), might actually make the US hegemony in the Americas more entrenched.
