WI: Slayer becomes the face of thrash metal

What if Slayer struck it lucky with Reign in Blood or South of Heaven, and were the face of thrash metal rather than Metallica?

Do you mean amongst metalheads, or in the mainstream world?

I don't really know how a band can "strike it lucky" with an album. But if for some reason Slayer was bigger than Metallica, I'd assume thrash metal would get heavier and you'd see Death Metal much bigger in the late 80s.

Look at Nirvana with "nevermind".
