Alright, so from the 1890's (when it was annexed) up until 1957 Christmas Island had been part of the Straits Settlement,
and more specifically Singapore, however in 1957 (two years before Singapore became Independent) Australia requested
the island be transfered to it, the British agreed and the island became part of Australia, with the Government of Singapore
receiving £2.9 million ($4.5 million) in compensation from Australia.

So, what if either Australia had'nt requested the island, or the British refused to give it to them, thus making the island an
overseaspart of Singapore?

How would the island have developed (it's only 30% white IOTL)? How would Singapore have developed with a territory that
far away? How would Singapore-Australia relations develop differently, if at all?
