WI: Singapore kept Christmas Island?

Odd question

Could the island, after having stayed under the rule of Singapore, have ended up a U.S. military base?

I was referring to Australia’s reason for possessing the island, not Singapore’s. Given Singapore’s location they hardly need an island 400km south of Java in which to attack the straits of Malacca.

I wonder why Australia didn't make stronger airbases on this island?

Asuming the only change is Singapore keeping it probably not, Singapore and America have never exactly been close ally's (neither have they ever disliked each other), though I suppose if Singapore, in an effort to keep the Australians in-line and Indonesia at bay they could form a relationship with the U.S. as an ally and allow it.

I was thinking for some reason that there was a point in time when Singapore had offered the U.S. bases in the country.

Stateless Englishman’s post #10 has the details of the runway on the island; more than sufficient for requirements and consistent with the ‘bare bones’ airbases in Australia’s north. The fighter aircraft, air defence, re-arming and other facilities are rapidly deployed from the south on short notice at time of need.
