WI Sheehan defeats Pelosi

OK. Last year, Cindy Sheehan ran for Congress against Nancy Pelosi. She got second (which is better than most other third party candidates). But, what if she had won?

-Who would take over as Speaker of the House? (Stenny Hoyer would be the likely choice...but this would possibly upset much of the Democratic Base.)
-What would the Republicans' reaction be? (Sheehan did deprive them of the target of Nancy Pelosi. (Hoyer is mnore to the right than Pelosi.) Further, Sheehan is willing to criticize Obama (Even though much of her criticism is from the opposite direction of Republicans)- and she opposes the corporate bailouts, which the Republican base opposes.)

Any similar thoughts? (Sheehan may be the Left's Ron Paul...)

Pelosi was elected to a 12th House term representing San Francisco with 71.56 percent of the vote, compared to 17.19 percent for Sheehan, with 67 percent of precincts reporting.

Linkarundo!

Considering the super-massive landslide the big question for me is "why does Sheehan win"? She was obviously running against the "unstoppable juggernaut" simply in order to make speeches about her pet anti-war project.

This requires some massive scandal against Pelosi or some massive turn for the super-horrible worst in Iraq, which means some much larger effects than just Pelosi losing.

While I have to generally agree @ Pelosi (not so much afraid as just annoyed at her ineffectual party-politics at a time when we need unity and positive action), somehow Cindy "I sing love ballads to Hugo Chavez from the soapbox I built from my dead son's casket" Sheehan doesn't seem much of an improvement!

Can't agree more. Call me insensitive, but as far as I am concerned Cindy Sheehan was never a particularly admirable person. She initially seemed to be an honest, grief stricken, but vaguely unbalanced professional grieving mom, but soon morphed into a calculating and selfish proponent of herself and her own views on the war at the expense of her own son's memory. Pelosi, who is showing the ability to undermine her own president about as effectively as Rush Limbaugh, is only an idiot. Sheehan is a demagogue, who could never be elected - even in San Francisco.

As someone who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, there is some items that would make Cindy Sheehan very unpopular. Considering in OTL Cindy Sheehan never visited many Asian-American community organizations because of their traditionally social-conservative slant would alienate close to 1/3 of the City's population. Sheehan's attempts to end JROTC in San Francisco, would have alienated even more people as well. For many portions of the African-American community (e.g. Fillmore, Hunter's Point, Bayview, et al.), Sheehan's attacks on Obama are seen as being racist and insensitive. In February 2009, Sheehan called Obama the "Uncle Tom for corporate America..." This statement alone would have brought about calls for resignation....

I'll agree with Zoomar on this. You can also call me insensitive, but I got the impression that Ms. Sheehan was using her son's death to advance her pet cause. Not to mention cozying up to the likes of Hugo Chavez, the Castro brothers, and allying herself with nuts like Ramsey Clark and his neo-Stalinist "International Action Center" and "ANSWER" (both known fronts for the Stalinist-leaning Workers' World Party) is a guaranteed turnoff for a lot of people. While I do have sympathy for her loss, Ms. Sheehan's antics since then have managed to endear herself to the fringe left, and not mainstream opinion. (Cheerleading for America's enemies does tend to do that...)

Cindy Sheehan has called the Iraqi terrorists who murdered her son and thousands of other Americans, freedom fighters. Nancy Pelosi has opposed our country's involvement in Iraq, without cheerleading for our enemies. So I've got to say I have more repect for Pelosi.
On the other hand, Cindy Sheehan favors ending the War on Drugs and decriminalizing marijuana. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. But unseating Nancy Pelosi? That could never happen in a million years.

While I could never vote for Pelosi (I voted for the old guy and the conservative chick), at least she made her views about Iraq without grandstanding and cheerleading for the enemy. No Congresscritter who opposed the war would call the mix of Baathists, Al-Qaida, and pro-Iranian thugs we're engaged against "freedom fighters", unless they wanted to lose the next election. Being against a war is one thing: but openly supporting the efforts of the enemy is another. One more reason Ms. Sheehan could never get elected to congress, let alone any other office.
