WI: Senator Michael Huffington

In 1994, Michael Huffington, then Husband of Arianna Huffington, was the Republican candidate for US senate in California, running against Democratic incumbent Diane Feinstein. Feinstein won reelection with 46.7 percent of the vote, while Huffington received 44.8 percent of the vote. What if he had won?

Given that he's Republican and she is left-Democrat, I'm not sure how well that marriage would survive, anyway.

She was actually a moderate Republican prior to the divorce - which may be one of the big butterflies of Michael Huffington getting elected, that the Huffington Post may be a center-right leaning website rather than center-left. Which combined with Drudge Report, might go a long way toward making the new talk radio.

As far as Senator Huffington, I can see him being a fairly popular moderate Republican senator in California, likely winning re-election in 2000. If he can win re-election in 2006 - no small thing being a Republican in 2006 if not much else has changed - it might be interesting to see if he comes out of the closet with the rising tide of LGBT rights - now THAT would have some impact politically.

Nah. He'd have only been narrowly elected in 1994 (a wave year), and would likely be swept away in 2000.

Having seen Huffington on the stump during the race,

Having seen Huffington on the stump during the race, I don't see it - this is a candidate who made Dan Quayle look like JFK.

Huffington was no Bill Dannemeyer, who made Bob Dornan look sane, but he bought his Congressional seat by ousting Bob Lagomarsino, and did his damnedest to buy the Senate race; in some ways, he was a more sucessful version of Carly Fiorina, for all the good that did him, or the Party.

Best,

What makes you say that?

Six year itch. Senators which are elected as a backlash in the first mid-term of a presidency often have trouble holding those seats six years later. This proved to be absolutely the case in 2000, which was a very good year for the Democrats in the senate. The same applies here in respect of popular board interest Senator Romney; an almost-certain defeat in 2000 and no visible national career path.

In that case, Would Feinstein have decided to run against Huffington in 2000 to get her seat back?
