WI: Senator/Mayor Fred Phelps

Gone Fishin'
Whilst I was doing some research for my TL, I came across some rather surprising facts about the late Pastor and leader of the Westboro Baptist Church, Fred Phelps. Namely that in 1992 he ran as Candidate in Kansas for nomination in the Democrats Senatorial nominee, coming second in place against Gloria O'Dell (Who would loose to Bob Dole). He also ran for mayor of Topeka in 1993 and 1997, presumably also as a Democrat.

So my question is What If Phelps won the nomination, or in a slightly less likely twist, he actually is elected as a Senator for Kansas or Mayor of Topeka?

He can't get elected. He could win a very-low-turnout primary before his profile got huge a la Alvin Greene maybe but he's toxic to like...every constituency in the US, even the most conservative Baptists.

He was a Democrat? I would have thought that he would have joined the party of the religious right.
If you paid attention it was the party of the religious right, you know the folks who originally formed to fight Slavery, carried the war through to its conclusion, and was instrumental in supporting Johnson getting the Civil Rights Act passed, who generally trampled each other to get to a microphone to denounce the man every time he opened his mouth.

If the GOP can have David Dukes as a member, why is so surprising that the Democrats can have a Phelps? I imagine that both parties spent a lot of time wishing their respective extremist would go away. Though I imagine that the Dems spent more time hoping nobody found out Phelps political orientation, or that he didn't come out of the closet.
