WI: Senator John Wayne

From Wikipedia

Due to his enormous popularity and his status as the most famous Republican star in Hollywood, wealthy Texas Republican Party backers asked Wayne to run for national office in 1968, as had his friend and fellow actor Senator George Murphy. He declined, joking that he did not believe the public would seriously consider an actor in the White House. Instead he supported his friend Ronald Reagan's runs for Governor of California in 1966 and 1970.

What if, instead of declining, John Wayne, had decided to run for public office? Could we have potentially seen him become a Senator, or even President?
Also, would he have used the 'John Wayne' stage name, or would he have had to run as 'Marion Morrison' (his real name)?
Thoughts?

I think he could have been elected Senator- Minnesota's crazy enough to vote Jesse Ventura and Al Franken:p so why not Texas?

No offense Minnesotans:D

He would have gone by John Wayne- Connie Mack (Florida Congressman) doesn't go by Cornelius McGillicudy, does he?

I doubt he would have elected President, though.
