WI: SEGA went multiplatform earlier in 1990s instead of 2000s?

so, i wonder what if SEGA went multiplatform, it could have went multiplatform early as 1990 then they could team up with Nintendo. would Sony and Microsoft have entered the market?
Any ideas?

for that would not work as genesis was a sucess but all of sega botched it, need to be early, like 1990, like no Mega Drive-Genesis at all.

The rest, ironically maybe 3DO would have a chance(nah still too overpriced) or make easier for a while, heck maybe delay PS1 entrance(as non saturn to compete, they would make something stronger for 1995-1996) and that would end in a stronger N64 too.

Other would be if butterflies flap, the nintendo-sony deal never got south or happen at all(check my tl in the sig for the former)

Again let's say your timetable(1993, genesis is a bust, Sonic was delayed or no pushed well, etc, sony still working in PS1 at the time)

Nintendo was working in the ultra 64 arcade, maybe sega would ask one for license or work with Nintendo in a model 2 arcade equivalent(with butterflies for n64)

What about Sonic? Sonic 3 and Knuckles is butterfly unless sega licensed that lock-on tech to third parties too and that would be interesting.

Panzer Dragoon and Sakura taisen are butterfly away or released in dumble down version for ps1 or a cd equivalent console.

That's fine. 1990 it is then... i will fix the idea in no time

So now 1990, Genesis-Mega Drive was a bust(figths with EA, lack of Third Party Quality, Tom Kalinske never joined, etc).

SNES is as otl, zero butterflies that front? No Mega-cd...so what will be with Sony and Nintendo? if the deal is renegated as otl or more amicable, still they would do something? Join 3DO group(and hijack it and released something cheap for 1992-1993 season)? OTL route? that is other big that Sega.

MS depend sony and if nintendo would want to push Linux for an alternate gamecube or equivalent, was PS2 Linux mania what scarred MS to created the Xbox to counter Sony and avoid a Linux Powered Sony OS for games. so that is butterfly away unless sony come as otl.

About Sega, now third party.... Sonic is dead or Moved to Snes? Sonic 1 can be easily moved to SNES and maybe more impressive(check kirby super star as example), Sonic 2 the same. Sonic 3 either invent Lock-on for Nintendo(with Nintendo help) or wait till SDD-1 Chip to compress everything in a simple cart.

Street of Rage would be complement and rival to Final Fight but fare as well.

Other arcade ports would come and gone.

Sega would be the same, just Panzer Dragoon, Sakura Taisen, Shenmue and other console games are erased as not need for console, Phantasy Star would thrive in RPG friendly SNES.

The Question are, 1. will Sonic 1 and other sonic-related games be on SNES well as Nintendo 64? 2. Who will be Nintendo's Rival if SEGA went multiplatform?

I'm an idiot, i forgot about NEC and Turbografx-16, they were the first in use CD too, maybe they relauch the Turbografx-16 with CD in 1990-1991(otl turbo duo was 1992, too little too late) and start competition with Nintendo, we could have a ps1-n64 equivalent for 1994-1995(rather the weak and distrasous PC-FX in 1993) and being the competition.

3DO if they got a good partner?(Sony? Panasonic?) and got competitive price(300-350. 400 if a must for ps1 graphics in 1993, if not 1994). Still trip hawking can easily botched it too).

Sony? maybe they break contract as sega goes down and want their own? something else? still maybe here without issues nintendo would fit back to back and they would be far worse otl.(non experience with sega make third party less relucant abandon nintendo).

Sonic games would be if exist 1991-1992(sonic would be ironically for snes launch,xd) 1992-1993 and 1994-1995, later games depend how unfold the series(aka doing the timeline,xd)

I think one of the better options for SEGA as a console manufacturer to last, is to shakeup the leadership. In this case, it would probably be a worse selling of the Master System.

SEGA leaders believed that they had hit the hidden cheat code to accessing money. (Heh). Selling attachments as ways to improve an experience, instead of working on next gen technology. At the time, they didn't have too. They were the market holder, Nintendo was the new kid on the block. Nintendo had to prove they could enter this market, SEGA didn't have to do anything.

However even back then there were complaints that SEGA Consoles weren't delivering the experience that they advertised. They wrote on their packaging, a better than arcade experience, but many complained that the games were sub-par.

What you need is an earlier scare, to force SEGA to stay away from the attachments and move onto new tech. A poorer end to the Master System life cycle could have done it.

Another possibility is keeping Nintendo & Sony together for longer. Nintendo and Sony wouldn't have been good together. The problems they had just trying to develop their console would hurt both if they kept working together for longer. That said, the console would probably still offer a much better experience than anything SEGA was putting out. Sony will still eventually split from Nintendo, but it'll give SEGA the needed breathing room to catchup.

I think you missed the system, that would be Mega Drive/Genesis Instead Master System( a worse selling Master system would make sega just drop out and focus in arcades or just delay MD instead)(ah you're european, yet that master system popularity in europe helped sega yet botched it later)

The Whole Add-on thing make sense in japan, as Nintendo and NEC were pretty sucessful with it but sega went overboard and as you say, damage the company as lack of general of focus of what to do with consoles).

IF you've read My tl(shamesly self plug,xd) Sega just stick their gun all places and focus and would've survived even otl.

Imagine if SEGA was a Third-Party Publisher earlier in 1990's before 2000's.
Their games would just be a port if SEGA went multiplatform on The Multiple Consoles.
