So one of my favourite historical figures is Savaronola, the Italian preacher who set Florence ablaze after the fall of the Medici calling for a new age of austerity and godliness while calling for a restoration of the republic so thwarted by Medici oligarchs. He had cadres of youths going around destroying art and flamboyant ornations and even persuaded Botticelli to burn his own paintings. Probably one of the greatest orators of all time and, demagogue or prophet, he certainly deserves more attention than he gets.
So what if Savaranola doesn't fall from power? Is it possibel or is he just a flash in the pan, a knee jerk reaction to decades of oppression. Or is he something more;could Florence actually become what he wanted, a sort of heavenly republic? What would need to happen? I'd guess that a successful invasion of Italy by France would help; Savarolola saw Henry as a divine scourge and so when he was defeated, Savaranola lost a lot of support.
So, I leave this question to your delectations.
