WI: Sassanid Succesors

Say for whatever reason, the Sassanid dynasty gets overthrown before the ascension of Yadzegerd III. Who are the most likely candidate for such an achievement. Is it possible for the seven Parthian clans to establish a neo-Parthian empire? Or will another native Persian royal house take control?

If you're looking for the Persian/Parthian Empire to continue, then the best way to bring this about is to have Khosrau II be sensible and not start a war with the Byzantine Empire. And THAT would have giant Mothra-sized butterflies.

Both Bahram Chobin and Shahrbaraz had an outside chance of having the house of Mihran replace the Sasanian Dynasty but it would likely be just that a dynastic change not the second coming of the Parthian Empire.

Khosrau II was, by all accounts I've ever read, an awful king and a very unpleasant character. It isn't out of the question that he might find himself overthrown earlier, to the great advantage of Persia, Rome and both their Arabian allies (depending on when the overthrow happens, it could butterfly the Islamic conquest of Arabia). I have difficulty seeing a different dynasty taking over though... Perhaps if Smbat IV Bagratuni, after successfully defeating the Hephthalites decides to make a try for the Persian throne and succeeds. That would result in a Persia with an Armenian Christian king. Could be very interesting...

I think the best way to prevent that from happening would be to keep Maurice on the throne. And I agree, it would have massive butterflies.
