WI Sarawak in Africa

Hello folks,
The Voulet Chanoine mission was a turn of the century colonial expedition around Tchad.
Its leaders became somewhat mad and tore a bloody trail through the land. They were eventually presumably killed by their soldiers, after they killed other French expeditions sent to stop them.

But what if they weren't killed and managed to solidify their hold on the land? Could they have created a land kingdom headed by those two renegade officers?

Similar examples exist: Sarawak, Counani, the Sedang Kingdom...

What are your thoughts?

Leopold still being rich and bought Kongo, but not being Belgian Monarch would do.
Jonboy's "Rudolf will reign, dear" timeline shows basically that, with Stephanie with modern memories blackmailing her father into giving her the Kongo, which she makes into a monarchy ruled by herself (and later one of her daughters). In the glimpses to the present the nation is still an monarchy ruled by a birracial branch of the Hapsburgs

The idea was more specifically about Voulet Chanoine or similar adventurer rather than some monarch getting more territory ;)
