I have somewhere (I don't remember exactly where, but it was a German site) read an interesting theory that says if Saddam took Saudi Arabia he would have been in the possesion of the world's largest oil deposits and thus untouchable enough so that no one would dare to move against him.
As I am not an expert in Desert Storm or Saddam's Iraq in general, my questions would be the following:
1. Could Saddam have taken Saudi Arabia in a Blitzkrieg before outside intervention? If I understood things correctly Saudi Arabia's military was third rate at best and the Saud family enjoyed much less support amongst the locals than Saddam. Was Iran a completely different opponent than Saudi Arabia would have been?
2. For the sake of argument let's say he could and he did, what would have been the (geo)political consequences?
