WI: Ryongchon explosion kills Kim Jong Il

The Ryongchon explosion in North Korea happened when flammable cargo exploded, killing or injuring 3,000 people. Kim Jong-il passed by the train station several hours before the explosion as he returns from China. What if the disaster turned into an assassination attempt for Kim Jong-Il? If it succeeded, what will North Korea face in the future, and who will be the leader?

I would assume the Military would take over given there would be not suitable successor at that time. However, the lack of a unifying figure not picked by "The Leader" might begin to strain relations with the populace in the long-term. Might. Depends how successful they are maintaining the brainwashing.

The best way I could see off the top of my head would be if Dear Leader's train had problems or something. A dangerous issue for the engineer, but not impossible for something to come up.

Aside from "Dear Leader", where any other high level officials with him at the time. Given the nature of North Korean politics, while loosing just one person could create problems, if two or three other bigwigs happened to be killed as well, that would be a political nightmare.
