WI Russia joined NATO?

WI The post COld War reforms were handled better and Russia became more liberal and democratic over the next few years instead of less to the point that Russia ended up joining NATO?

Would EU membership follow? Would NATO forces have fought in Chechynia?

WOuld Russian forces be fighting in Afganistan again?

I doubt that Nato would have fought in Chechnya. Probably consensus would be so difficult to reach that Nato would cease to mean anything.

Why would it want to to be a member of NATO? Leaving aside the issues of the former Eastern Bloc countries being very uncomfortable about Russia, would Russia really give up 500 years of xenophobia and be happy to be a sub-ordinate part of somebody else's alliance?

As for the EU - why does the EU want to support even more poor Eastern European farmers / factory workers. It's not like Russia is going to provide raw materials at below market cost.

Why would NATO want to get involved in Russia's border wars?

Agreed. Although I suspect that after 9-11, if Russia was part of NATO, there could have been some support given, although nothing springs to mind.

Concensus concerns would be a problem, but this ATL Russian would be more agreeable than OTL Russia.

Because 500 years of xenophobia didn't really work out that great for it?

Also if your part of a military alliance, that alliance should be less threatening to you.

And protect you from other threats.

Also, sub-ordinate? Not really aware of the US really domineering, say France.

Might provide better investment oppertunies?

And as for Russia's border wars, a more secure Russia might be a better neighbor.

And then you have the very concept of collective security. Bigger is stronger and more likely to not have to fight, and if fight, win.

Russia's entry into NATO would cause some of the Eastern European members to leave. The Baltics joined pretty much as a big "fuck you" to Russia.

Russia trying to join NATO would simply result in national humiliation for Russia. NATO is by design an anti-Russian alliance as any of the NATO servicemembers on this board will gladly confirm.

It's not going to happen. Neither side wants it.

Yeah. As Leonid Kaganov once said, "if Russia entered NATO first, the Baltic states would have had to convert to Islam". (He also continued: "...but now, if Russia ever enters NATO, it'll be all the way to the Netherlands". I don't know what he meant by that, though.)
IMHO, Russia entering NATO sometime in the early '90s might well be plausible with a '91 or '92 POD, but probably not later and/or with a POD after '93... say, when again did the Baltics enter NATO IOTL? ;)
