Historically, Roosevelt had proposed that he and Willkie run on a unity ticket. Wendell had at the time been a major supporter of Rossevelt (despite having opposed him only four years prior), and had become a champion of the more progressive elements in political society. However, even if it had flown, would the Democratic Party bosses have accepted it? And assuming that Willkie does not die in October, and takes on after Roosevelt, does he handle things differently than Truman?
