During the Siege of Rome in 537-538 the Ostrogoths, in an attempt to starve out the Romans, cut the aqueducts, thus depriving Rome of its life sustaining water. This caused a massive decline in the city of Rome. The population dropped because without the Aqueducts the city couldn't sustain its population. So in essence this was the beginning of the end for the city of Rome. After this the city became shadow of what it once was and it wouldn't recover until the Renaissance a thousand years later. So what if the Ostrogoths never cut/blocked the aqueducts? Would Rome remain a large and important city? Would this mean the Popes have a capital fitting of Christianity? Or would this merely continue a city on life-support, prolonging the inevitable fall of Rome and the cities importance?
