WI: Roger B. Taney nomination rejected

The nomination of Roger B. Taney, well known for his later ruling in Dred Scott, was bitterly opposed by anti-Jacksonians. Say Taney's nomination is rejected, who does Jackson make Chief Justice instead? How does this new Chief Justice react to the slavery divide as it evolves?

John McLean, would be the best bet, he was the only ally of Jackson's who was also one of the two dissenters in the Dred Scott decision. With him as Chief Justice, he may anger the south, but would stick to his guns.

The worst person to have as Chief Justice would be John Archibald Campbell, who was appointed by Franklin Pierce to the United States Supreme Court in 1853, he served until the outbreak of the American Civil War, when he became an official of the Confederacy.
