WI: ROC Successfully Defends Hainan, the Wanshan Islands, and Zhoushan

What if the Republic of China, led by the Guomindang successfully repelled the People's Liberation Army's invasions of Hainan, the Wanshan Islands, and Zhoushan Island? Would this lead to more governments recognizing the ROC over the People's Republic of China or more attempts by the People's Liberation Army to take those territories? Would the Taiwan Strait Crises still happen as OTL or be butterflied away?

It is arguable that if the GMD had held on to Hainan just two more months in 1950, until the Korean War started, the US would then have committed itself to the defense of Hainan (as well as Taiwan).

You might say that the two situations (Taiwan and Hainan) are not the same, and that the US would never have committed itself to defend an area so close to the mainland and so "indefensible" as Hainan. But after all, the US and PRC during the 1950's sometimes seemed to be on the brink of war over Quemoy and Matsu. There was a lot of popular support in the US for the idea that "not one more additional inch" must be ceded to the Chinese Communists.

For one, the RoC could concievably still sell itself as the Republic of China, as opposed to transitioning to Taiwan.

It also allows for Hainan to act as a potential place to flee too during the worst of Mao's reign - think of people fleeing there ala Cubans to Florida.

Wonder if we might see Macao and Hong Kong given to them rather than the PRC
