WI: Richard Nixon lives another 6 years

You're all forgetting one element: His wife Pat.

Pat died in 1993, Dick didn't last a year without her.

You'll need Pat to live longer in order for Dick to live longer, I would say.

Considering his success in rehabilitating his reputation in his last couple of years, it definitely seems plausible that he is even better viewed today if he continues on the path he had been on. Looking at his interviews post-presidency, when he would appear on shows, he gives genuinely good insight and is very sharp. If he continues to play that role, I think people (especially younger people who don't have Watergate etched into their memory) will have a significantly better opinion of him and his presidency.

I have to agree, especially if you're getting him to live to 100.

Nixon was a lot like Johnny cash in the like that he essentially waited to die and effectively gave up in some ways after their wives died. Nixon I think less so than Cash, but it's still something to consider.

Pats health had been in decline since the 80's however if I recall correctly. I believe she herself had a stroke during this time.

So, possibly you could even have pat die earlier, so Nixon is stronger and able to handle it better physically. Or have her also not have a stroke

If W did not listen to his father why would you assume he would have listened to Nixon? I agree that his reputation would have continued to improve.

I think he would have listened because Nixon wasn't his father.

I've gotten the impression sometimes that W. Wanted to prove to himself that he could live up to his father without relying on him.

Oh come on. Some of the stuff in this thread is ridiculous. I get he's the beloved mascot around here, but he isn't gonna have the ASB magic wand necessary to make Bush the Lesser wise, help McCain beat Obama, or stop the GOP from drifting deeper into its Fox/Drudge/Rush echo chamber of madness. You're all putting too much stock in that "last liberal president" trope and acting like this guy didn't help invent or nurture many of the modern GOP's worst tendencies.

Woodward said in "State of Denial" that Kissinger was advising Bush that "victory is the only meaningful exit strategy" during the darkest days of Iraq and essentially treated it like a replay of the Vietnam War.

"This is so fascinating. Kissinger's fighting the Vietnam War again because, in his view, the problem in Vietnam was we lost our will."

I can see Dick giving similar "advice".

Its much more likely that Nixon encourages and cheerleads the last 20 years of Republican bullshit instead of standing athwart yelling stop imho. Shut down the impeachment? He'd probably be on Meet the Press insisting Clinton's scandals were worse than Watergate.

This is tongue in check but hell

They are making him into Jesus while you are making him into some sort of Idi amin.
Neither is Right IMO.

I'd think Nixon would be a bit appalled at the state of the GOP in 2001... IIRC, he wasn't big into social conservatism, at least to the degree the party went back then... I think he'd see more eye to eye with Bush 1 and Clinton than Bush II...
