WI: RFK sits out '68, Nixon assassinated instead.

What if RFK had decided to sit out of the Presidential Race in 1968, and Nixon is assassinated by a radical leftist after winning the Illinois Primary (i.e. think the Weathermen.)? Will it be Rockefeller or Reagan who gets the nomination? Or will it be a compromise candidate? Who would they choose as a running mate? Can Humphrey beat the Republican nominee? Would the Electoral College deadlock thanks to George Wallace? And overall what effect would the person elected in '68 have on history?

If Nixon is assassinated by a leftist, it's likely, though not certain, that they would go with a conservative anticommunist like Reagan (or a compromise candidate with similar views).

Also, if RFK didn't join the race, LBJ would've stayed in, as he only dropped out when he realized that he couldn't beat both Kennedy and McCarthy.
