WI: Revolutionary Philippines?

So, POD in the Philippine Revolution. Let's say the Americans help the First Philippine Republic kick out the Spanish and let them be on their way (with a few trade concessions of course). How does the islands fare in the 21st century?

At the very least, in return for support the US Navy will want a coal refueling station and a base, somewhere, on the Islands, and will probably get it.

As for what would happen to the Philippines without all of that infrastructure development money being pumped in, and the civil administration structure being set up, well, you'd probably not get a middle class to form in the way that it did OTL in the Manila area in any kind of size, and most of the islands would not see much economic development for quite a while. It is unlikely that the Moros, with their slaveholding habits, will be brought to heel by the new government anytime soon, and there is probably a lot more subsistence farming long term rather than any sort of transition to large scale production.

Basically the Philippines would be a lot poorer but the government would be more indigenous and sovereign.
