I was reading the excellent "Our Struggle" thread by The Red, when I pondered about how a conflict between a Communist Germany and Fascist Russia would have gone down. I also admitted that it was an idea I've always been interested in, and perhaps it could also be interesting if we assume that Hitler and Stalin still got into power in their countries but with their political roles being switched. Another member on that thread gave an IMO very interesting analysis on how Stalin could have become a fascist.

  • Fascist Stalin: Stalin gets abandoned by Besarion and Keke as an infant, perhaps because they either couldn't afford to keep him or because of them feeling repulsed by Stalin due to his webbed feet. Stalin gets adopted by a Russian family, and he grows to become a staunch Russian nationalist. Perhaps at some point he finds out that his biological parents abandoned him, and this is when the nationalism grows stronger and to a point when it turns into outright racism, but there are also feelings of self-hatred for finding out that he is indeed Georgian. Nevertheless, he forges information about his past and enlists in the army for the First World War. After his service and the end of the First World War, Russian land is lost and people come to the conclusion that the Russians need to reclaim their lost territories. Stalin participates in the White Movement (where they win in this scenario, perhaps as a result of Trotsky and Lenin dying in 1918, and a communist revolution ends up being very brutally suppressed), blames territorial losses on ethnic minorities (including Ukrainians, Kazakhs, and Germans) within the Russian Empire, becomes very popular amongst the White community and he finally becomes the leader of Russia. Stalin's ultimate goal is to expand Russian "living space" west into Poland, the Baltic states, and Germany, and then either wipe out or enslave the Germanic people. The Russian Empire becomes its own Nazi Germany.
  • Communist Hitler: Much of the reasoning for Hitler becoming communist in alternate history has been established by the already mentioned "Our Struggle" thread, but I'd like to try and analyse for myself how this could have happened. Perhaps as a result of the abuse from his father and being forced to follow his father's footsteps, Hitler becomes an outcast and rejects much popular opinion in Germany at the time of his adolescence. It is at this point that he discovers the works of Karl Marx and becomes mesmerised with them. After WW1, Germany ends up falling to a communist revolution, which establishes a socialist/state capitalist union, which ends up being slowly purged and taken over by a totalitarian figure (Hitler) who has established a cult of personality and took away democracy, without using racial rhetoric. Germany has become its own Soviet Union.
And maybe after that:

  • Commie Germany, which tried and failed to establish communism in Poland 1919-1921, creates an allied communist puppet state in Czechoslovakia, all the while without annexing Bohemia or Moravia. Slovakia still becomes a puppet state, but is communist.
  • Fascist Russia enacts a crash-industrialisation using nationalised corporations, and brings about a reign of terror against left-wing, far-left, communist, as well as right-wing but non-fascist factions. No collectivisation happens.
  • Russia proposes a non-aggression pact with Germany, splitting the Baltic states between German and Russian spheres, but Fascist Russia secretly plans to take/colonise Germany, while Germany secretly plans to bring communism to Russia. In spite of that, the pact does resolve trade deficits for both nations.

Now I'd like to know how a World War would have looked like after that? Which one do the Allies side with? If not any of the Allied Powers, who else would be their allies? Who would win overall between Fascist Stalin and Communist Hitler?

Maybe it's stupid, maybe I'm an idiot, but I thought this was an interesting idea nonetheless.
