WI:Republic of Indian Stream survives?

From what Wikipedia tells me, the Republic existed only due to a disagreement between Britain and the US over a part of the boundary with Canada, and disgruntled settlers only declared their own Republic to avoid taxation from both sides. Since the republic is small (less than 750 miles and only 300 people), I'd imagine they'd be absorbed by one side sooner or later once they reached an agreement.

Great Britain or the USA will assert or cede its claim on the area at some point in time and it will be absorbed. It is not viable in the long run as an independent nation.

During prohibition, effectively taken over by organised crime so that it could be used as a base for smuggling? In modern times, a tax haven and contains at least one casino?

Don't dismiss it just because of it's population and size. It was larger than Singapore, and likely would have attracted immigration in the long run.

Can the USA and Britain agree a compromise solution with joint administration, an American Andorra?
