WI regarding Japanese garrisons in French Indochina after the 1945 surrender

Just how crucial were the Japanese garrisons to maintaining the French colonial foothold in Indochina after the war's end? For instance, what if, for whatever reason, the French don't trust the surrendered Japanese troops to garrison the colony until reinforcements from Metropolitan France and Algeria can arrive, and they instead repatriate the Japanese troops? Would that leave a gap of a few weeks to a month for the Vietminh to act with free reign?

The french would have face stronger risistance and might have lost a few more men during the struggle but the outcome would have been the same
