After the US entered WWI there was an enormous campaign of persecution and hysteria against German-Americans. Despite being arguably the largest minority language/culture in the US since its founding, the war decimated German cultural life in America. Institutions and newspapers shut down and many German-Americans anglicized their names. What if German-American life had been able to weather the storm? Would it have led to larger support for the German-American Bund and sympathy to Nazism?
