WI Rechauvanist Finland reclaims Karolia

In the 1990's the Russian army was in bad shape. Nothing that the Finns might not be able to handle. What needs to happen to make this into a war, and what will happen as a result?

I think you mean "Karelia". And "Revanchist", I guess.

The question is why? I mean, the Russian Republic of Karelia (East Karelia) is now majority Russian, IIRC, while the portions of West Karelia that the Soviets took after WW2 have had their Finnish population entirely moved out, and are similar to Kaliningrad in the whole "no one in their right mind would want that" status...

First of all, by 1990 Karelia hardly had any Finns in it. Most of them had left thanks to Stalin's policies and had been replaced with Russians. Secondly, Russia still had thousands of nukes lying around and although in bad shape, the Russian army is still way bigger and the Russian people will unite if anything like this happens. In short: ASB.

IIRC, Russia offered to sell/give it back but the Finns did the math, rebuilding the infrastructure etc would have cost to much.
