WI: Reagan Was Elected President in 1976?

Yes, and like we know, moderates like Ford and Dole are more electable as rightwings like Reagan and Bush II.:D

That being said, 1976, if not quite a democratic year, certainly tilted their way. Ford was a moderate, more or less clean president (in a cycle where that was crucial), and with a few exceptions ran a nearly flawless campaign, and still lost. I suppose that a best-case scenario for Reagan might have him improve on Ford's performance a bit, but Carter still has an edge, and even best-case scenario for the GOP is a rather slim margin of victory.

It is also worth remembering that in OTL the Reagan did deals with the Iranian regime and his response to the loss of soldiers to terrorism in Lebanon was to pull troops out with their tails between their legs.

Carter of course did NOT submit to blackmail.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: He also started a big military buildup and sent troops to take Grenada. As for Lebanon, he was more than happy to pull the troops out of there because he really didn't want them there in the first place; he sent them mainly because of international pressure, and did so belatedly. As for the Iran/Contra deal... yep, he was guilty as charged.
Carter didn't submit to blackmail, but he was widely seen in the US as not being up to the challenge. I can remember a political cartoon at the time showing Khomeini as a bully grabbing Carter by the shirt and hoisting him off the ground, with Carter sporting a black eye. That's really how the US public saw it at the time...

Fuzzy Math

Ford ran as an incumbent in an anti-incumbent year.
Dole ran as a challenger against a heavily favored incumbent.
Reagan ran as a challenger in a poor economy with foreign policy in a shambles

Bush II was elected in a 5-4 vote by the most politically corrupt Supreme
Court since the Roger Taney court (Dred Scott) of the 1850's.

What happened to Bush II's opponent? And what happened to Bush II?

Critical comment?:p
