WI: Reagan was accepted into the Communist Party

I remember reading about it in a book on Presidential trivia years ago, but I cannot remember the title offhand. I don't know if that was the origin of the claim.

One does wonder why. Any Reaganographers able to tell us?

As a Reaganographer, I have never heard this factoid before. If it is true, I am surprised his enemies never used it. Then again, they would become McCarthyists in doing so.

I do remember from his autobiography that he had dedicated himself to fighting fascism, should it come to America. He recalled one event shortly after World War II where he addressed a crowd of his peers and colleagues from the film industry. He recieved cheers and applause for anunciating his opposition to fascism. Almost as a sidenote, he added that he would fight Communism as well, saying that it was on par with fascism. He claimed that the audience remained deathly silent, suggesting some solidarity with, if not membership of the Communist party or other such sympathies.
