WI: Reagan has an obvious Alzheimer's episode while in office?

In the Spring of 1987, if senior aides had done the right thing, and either Nancy or longtime aide and friend Ed Meese had privately said to Ron, ‘it’s time’

It would have been the responsible decision, but we would have gotten unlucky. For I don’t think President Bush would have had the conservative bona fides to allow as graceful a phase-down of the cold war.

I'm curious as to Reagan's legacy if he resigns or (especially) is removed from office by Article 25.

I could see a core of Republicans/conservatives seeing it as Democratic conspiracy to remove a great man from office on the eve of his triumph. Whether or not that gains traction I don't know. Depending on when the departure happens it could improve or damage his legacy (regarding Iran-Contra, missile reduction talks, etc.).

Warning
My understandsing is that even during the some of the top security briefings, such as Joint Chiefs and Cabinet meetings, Reagan supposedly fell asleep alot.

Darth,

I have also heard this, from sources usually hypercritical of President Reagan. Possibly you have something from an unbiased origin? My "understanding" is that Bill Clinton would frequently fall asleep after a particularly strenuous bout with Monica... Probably just a jealous Republican sore head.

You know, there is a politics chat forum if you're going to take things this personally.

Creighton,

Please don't presume to tell someone what they take personally. If I have struck a political nerve, live with it.

...and this is enough of a political flame bait troll that it deserve a formal warning to confine political discussion to Chat.

I strongly suggest you DO NOT do this again.

Reagan apologized that the Baker appointment had been leaked, but he said he hoped Regan would stay around long enough to help [Howard] Baker get grounded in the new job.

Regan refused. "I'm sorry, Mr. President, but I won't be in any more. This is my last day. . . "
So, Chief-of-Staff Don Regan basically tells President Reagan that he can go fly a kite ? ?

Yeah, he basically does!

This happened late Feb. 1987.
