On March 17, 1957 a plane carrying Philippine President Ramon Magsaysay crashed in Cebu, shortly before the conclusion of his first term. Magsaysay was eligible to run for a second term and at the time was popular with a clean, well-run populist administration that was modernizing the country but also cozy with the USA in the early Cold War.
