Rameses II is popularly considered one of the greatest and most famous pharaohs. While he has often been accused of exaggerating his achievements, he nevertheless had a successful reign. His legacy can be seen in his ambitious building projects, and even today he's regarded as an Egyptian national hero.

But none of that was certain in 1274 BCE, when Ramesses fought in the Battle of Kadesh just five years into his reign. What if he'd died in the battle?

Kadesh was just one minor battle in Middle East so it hardly would had changed on Hittite position much if anything. But Egypt is another thing. Had Ramesses II already heir? If not then Egypt has much of troubles. There is not yet many decades from reign of infamous Akhenaten.

Well of sons and daughters Ramses II had already plenty enough before Qadesh. So succession shouldn't be an issue. Nefertari will likely take a regency however.

Don't think Egypt will be lost, but the entire valley of the Orontes will become Hittite, Phoenicia all submits to Muwatalli, and Palestine fragmented in tribal powers accepting Hittite vassalage.

But if the Hittite Empire will fall into a civil war soon as OTL, maybe a rejuvenated Egypt may flip back control of the lost regions.
