WI Puerto Rico was a state?

How is it possible to have the island of Puerto Rico to be incorporated as a full fledged state of the United States of America by the year 2010? Any POD is well acceptable though my preference is for something around the 1950s. What would be the effect on the history of the island and its people should it become a state?

Puerto Rico

Puerto Ricans seen to like their current statis. That would have to change. Contanentals think of Puerto Ricans as potential Democrats. We would need Republican territory to balance that. Notice that Hawii, expected Democrats and Alaska, Expected Republicans, gained statehood at about the same time. Patsy Mink and John Gravell are exceptions.

If Gore wins in 2000 and 2004, than leaves office with lower approval ratings than Bush, would many more people be Republican? This means their needs to be Democratic voters to balance out the demographics?

PR could have become a state in my opinion if certain issues(like U.S. citizenship, forcing english and banning spanish in school) had been resolved earlier, an earlier separation of the coalition of pro-independence and fence sitters, solidifying the various pro-statehood parties that existed early on and keeping Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. as governor longer to avoid James R. Beverley and Robert Hayes Gore who unlike Roosevelt were very unpopular.

PR could have been made a state if it was purchased before the Civil War. Spain was not in a great state during the first half of the 19th century. In 1815 their empire was pretty much crumbled and only kept PR as a sense of pride. They offered free land to anyone who wanted it as long as they remained loyal to the Spanish Crown because many of her colonies were rebelling. It doesn't take a whole lot of imagination for an industrialized USA with a booming economy to buy the island from the destitute Spanish.

Statehood could have been initiated in one of those add a free state/add a slave state deals that was so popular in the decades leading up to the Civil War. Such as the Missouri Compromise. It could have been added as a slave state as there was limited slavery there (that's a horrible term). This could have effected when the Civil War started.
