WI: Proportional Britain

I've always wondered what Britain with proportional representation would look like. While only the Libs/LibDems have really been fighting for it, if the Alliance won a majority in a 1983/1984 election (probably achieved with Britain losing the Falklands), they would be in a good position to do so. From there, what would happen? I'd imagine that party splinters would be more common, and the argument over wasted votes would be dead. I think the Green surge in the late 1980s could turn into seats.

Probably much worse ...

Seeing that they occasionally get 15-20% of the vote yet 5% of seats that's quite natural ...

A succession of weak coalition governments which rarely get anything done.
Proportional representation in pure form rarely works.
What does work - a mix of single-seat constituencies and national lists and/or minimal threshold and/or extra seats for largest party.[/QUOTE]
