WI: Prop 187 Is Found Constitutional

What if Prop 187 is found constitutional by the Federal courts? What effect does this have on the California GOP, and what effect does this have on illegal immigration?

Expect the Republicans to alienate a lot of people - not just Mexican-Americans (who might go even more blue than they did IRL) but a lot of other immigrants that historically have trended Republican but have some issues with illegal immigration (say the Vietnamese and the Filipinos, both of whom at the time leaned GOP IIRC). The GOP has just lost the immigrant vote in the state for a generation, much earlier than it arguably did. The Dems dominate, though there's going to be some factionalism involved.

I don't see why everyone thinks this type of legislation automatically alienates Latino or Asian immigrants. First of all, not all of them are illegal/amnesty supporters, quite the contrary. Second, those Hispanics or Asian-Americans who opposed it were most likely Democratic-leaning, if not Democratic, before Prop 187. Similar to SB1070 in that regard.

Also, California had been trending Democratic long before 1994. Bush barely scraped a win in 1988 and lost by 14 points, or 1.5 million votes, in 1992. White flight that came with the downsizing of the defense industry and the departure of Republican, middle-class white collars workers to the Southwest eliminated the bedrock of GOP support in California. Or severely eroded it to the point where unless they made major inroads (30-40% of Asian and Hispanic votes) among ethnic communities the Dems would win. GOP strength is also exaggerated by the fact that between 1952 and 1988, Nixon or Reagan were on the ballot in 7 of 9 presidential elections.

I don't think you've spoken with many legal immigrants. They're often very disapproving of the illegal variety.
