WI: Presidential Election 2004: Ron Paul( R) Vs. Al Sharpton (D)

what if in the 2004 election, Ron Paul had challenged George W. Bush for the Republican nomination and won the primary? and at the same time, the democrats had nominated Al Sharpton? how would the election go?

It would be a tie, each guy would get one vote since everyone else would be looking for a new country to live in.

Well, let's see. As of 2004, 91 percent of Republicans approved of Bush's job performance http://www.gallup.com/poll/27658/republicans-ratings-bush-averaging-75-democrats-only.aspx and probably even of the remaining 9 percent, few opposed him from a Paulist viewpoint. As for Sharpton, in South Carolina, where Jesse Jackson won the Democratic primary in 1988, Sharpton got ten percent of the vote in 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_presidential_primaries,_2004

It is meaningless to ask which one would have won the general election, because for either--let alone both of them--to win their party's nomination would require the US to be an incredibly different country form what it was in 2004.

The winner would be a write-in candidate or the most recognizable sane politician, because nobody except for a handful of nutjobs wants Ron Paul or Al Sharpton to be President.

The only way Al Sharpton could have become the Democratic nominee in 2004 is if all the other nominees were killed or scandalized.

Heck, I'd vote for Hillary as a write-in candidate...

The only way Al Sharpton would be the (D) candidate is if the party completely collapsed after 2000 and a new party emerged with most of the OTL democratic support.

Yeah this is when Al Gore announces he is running as member of the American Party or something like that.

By the way who would be the VP's for Sharpton and Paul.

Millions of Americans horrified at the thought of either man sitting in the Oval Office decide to exercise the write-in vote option and John McCain wins the presidency in a landslide. :D

Yeah, assuming all else is OTL up to the election, a third party candidate is going to win. Now if we're talking like a Post-Rumsfeldia type deal where the right is still radical and the left moves left as a result, then maaaaaaybe

Good question.
Possible choices for Paul:
Gary Johnson
Barry Goldwater Jr.
Possible Choices for Sharpton:
Jesse Jackson
Cynthia McKinney.
